(TRADE NEWSWIRE): Maritime Media Limited, organizers of the annual Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA), has released nominees for the Maritime Man of the Year, 2012, TRADE NEWSWIRE reports.
In a statement obtained by TRADE NEWSWIRE, signed by the Founder of MIMA, Asu Beks, the candidates were carefully selected based on their outstanding contributions to the development of the maritime industry in the just concluded year.
The shortlisted candidates are:
Godswill Akpabio, Governor of Akwa Ibom State: He is recognised for initiating and pushing through the planned action on developing a deep seaport in Ibaka, Akwa Ibom State.
Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Governor of Lagos State: The peoples’ governor receives this recognition for attracting and supporting the establishment of two deep seaport projects, to be situated in Lekki and Badagry.
Senator Idris Umar, Minister of Transport, Federal Republic of Nigeria: Through his well-articulated policies, he has entrenched stability and a sense of direction for the various parastals and departments under the Federal Ministry of Transport. Under his management, the maritime industry in Nigeria has recorded rapid development of multi-modal system of transport, through the commencement of rail services from the ports in Lagos, to the hinterlands as far as Kano, the first time in more than 20 years.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote: The richest black man in the world makes this list for his contributions to port development in Nigeria since 2006. He is reputed as one of the pioneer indigenous terminal operators in Nigeria. Through its subsidiary, Greenview Development Nigeria Limited, Dangote Group currently manages Terminal E of the Apapa Port, Lagos, offering the lowest cost of doing business at the ports.
